Conversion of the Card Catalog

The San Diego Air & Space Museum (SDAM) seeks funding to implement an Integrated Library System (ILS) for the Library & Archives. Current records, particularly the existing card catalog for the books, need to be converted to the Library of Congress's standardized Machine Readable Cataloging (MARC) format used by all major ILSs. Once converted to an electronic format, the catalog will be made accessible through the World Wide Web and greatly increase public awareness of the valuable and extensive historical materials available in the Museum's world class collection.

Implementation of an ILS, and particularly the conversion of the card catalog records, will significantly improve the Library & Archive's internal operation and make its valuable resources known and available to a wider range of users. It will also provide much better support to Museum curatorial, education, and restoration staffs at its Balboa Park and Gillespie Field facilities.
